When I first started making websites I coded them by hand in HTML and CSS, often in a text editor like BBEdit. And I liked it. I enjoyed seeing my code visualized on a page, and I enjoyed creating new things over and over again. I mostly do front end design now, although I dig into WordPress on a pretty regular basis. While design trends have changed over the years, the goal of creating a simple, compelling, and easy to navigate site has stayed the same. A good web page is useful, easy to use, and compelling. No matter what the technology behind it is, all of those things need to be there. Here are some sites I've designed and coded:
